If you’ve ever wondered what it might feel like to be a Cirque du Soleil acrobat wonder no more. The introduction of aerial silks and trapeze swings into mainstream fitness has arrived. Aside from the sheer thrill of hanging upside down, swinging from the ceiling and resting in what looks like a cocoon, there are many health and fitness benefits to Aerial Yoga. The short list includes spinal decompression, enhanced range of motion, improved blood flow, assistance with difficult yoga poses and improved strength. So many of the poses and stretches would be impossible to duplicate on the mat. The ability to position yourself in such a way that lets gravity enhance the stretch while the swing supports you is undeniable. Undoubtedly there is a fear factor for some to overcome in the beginning but that’s all part of the learning process. For many people it can be a big confidence booster as they see themselves making progress weekly in fitness skills, overcoming fear and boosting kinesthetic awareness. I encourage you to give it a try and see if you don’t feel the difference.
